For Schmidt, making her Broadway debut was a “completely magical experience” and the very goal that had originally motivated her to move to New York City after college. Schmidt expressed gratitude for making her debut on a show “with such a timely message,” and was thrilled to be “a woman of color working on a musical about one of the most iconic women of color in history.”

“Female musicians often have twice as much to prove — when women (let alone women of color) create something, it needs to be of such impeccable quality in order to be taken seriously, and there’s little-to-no room for error,” she said.
